Identifying features by slicing point clouds

We introduce a new method for extracting the features of a 3D object directly from the point cloud of its surface scan. The objective is to identify several types of features, such as holes, pockets, bosses, and also similar and symmetric parts at the surface of the object. We need to do this with the least human interaction possible, and the only information we have is the point cloud of the 3D scan of the object. With this method we identify the features of the object by dividing the point cloud in slices, and by identifying a local feature in selected slices. We compare the local features in adjacent slices and combine the information to identify the global feature of the object.
